Growing up on a farm in rural Australia, Kim always loved to get his hands dirty and understand how equipment worked. Having started in 1992 as a one-man band with a single truck providing transport services, he now has more than 500 employees providing remote accommodation solutions around Australia. Meet the 2013 Entrepreneur Of The Year Services category winner. KJM Contractors provides modular and non- permanent camps to clients in the mining, oil and gas markets, with complementary divisions including transport, Envirofow Water Technologies, engineering and air charter. It also offers remote-areas services in Roma and the Cooper Basin. KJM Contractors currently services 90% of South Australia’s remote mines and has serviced all the new mines in the past 10 years in South Australia. "The best thing about South Australia is that we are the gateway to the rest of the country," says Kim. "It's our regional home and a good place to have an engineering base." Kim believes that you always need to invest for your future. "I think that when you put your heart into something, you need to give it at least 10 years," he says. One of Kim's biggest hurdles has been successfully growing the business through almost three years of the global fnancial crisis (GFC). “We have amazing growth numbers now because we did the hard work back then," he says. He recalls that during the GFC he was home on average just one month every year, "going around Australia and kicking down doors to get enough work, not just to survive, but to grow the business. Every month we took a fresh look at our strategy and reset the direction we were heading in. Numbers tell the truth and you need to be proactive and keep changing your business model until it works." Kim sees the next 10 years as an exciting time for KJM Contractors. Rising production in liquid natural gas and coal seam gas projects is leading to unprecedented investment in the oil and gas sector. The company is embarking on two major new projects: a logistics hub within the Cooper Basin and a development application in Tipperary for the coal seam gas operations. These are massive opportunities, which Kim believes will add A$50–60 million of turnover to the company within its frst 12 months of operation. Throughout his business journey and refecting on his success, one of Kim's core values has been "staying true to yourself". As for winning the Entrepreneur Of The Year Services category award, Kim says, "I don't get proud of much but this is one of those things you can be proud of."
