Exceptional Australia 2012 43 Q: What did you enjoy most about your experience as a World Entrepreneur Of The Year judge? A: I was fascinated with hearing the success stories of Entrepreneur Of The Year country winners and the challenges they had overcome in their pursuit of their goals. Q: What three traits do you think entrepreneurs need to be successful? A: 1. Curiosity --- why? 2. Persistence 3. Ability to swim against the current when required. Q. Are entrepreneurs today different to when you started out and if so, how? A: I think the basics remain the same --- how do you creatively take an idea and fnd your way to make it a commercial success? Q. What is the most valuable piece of advice you have been given? A: Never ever give up if you think you are right. Q: What are the biggest challenges you have tackled? A: My biggest challenge was getting 30 people to lend a 26 year old $10,000 each to start a business that was half way around the world that I had no experience in and no security. Thanks go to venture capitalists prepared to back a person wanting to follow a dream of establishing a new business. Q: What achievement are you most proud of? A: My biggest achievement has been building a private company from zero to $1.3 billion in revenue --- and maintaining ownership. It has, however, taken 42 years to do so. Q: What advice do you give to aspiring entrepreneurs? A: Think big. Think bold. Follow your dreams. Q. If you had a motto, what would it be? A: Don't wait for your ship to come in, row out to meet it. Or: When you can't tell the difference between work and play, you are in the right place.
